Knife Question

As a result of the rampant knife meme, it has been brought to my attention that I am woefully underbladed.  It’s not like it’s a surprise … I don’t carry one on a daily basis because I usually have no pockets. Five days a week I’m in a skirt of some sort and heels. I have a small Leatherman multi-tool that lives in my purse, and the micro-SOG that is on my lanyard next to my badges. The pockets on some of my jeans are too shallow to carry anything worthwhile but then I thought … my key ring! I have plenty of room, and it’s usually in reach. So, if you were to recommend a knife to put on my key ring, what would it be? I don’t want a Swiss Army knife with all the tweezers and the toothpicks and whatzits. I just want a single, useful blade.

Thanks in advance …

  1. I can carry my Gerber mini paraframe in the little coin pocket of my jeans. Small, but better than nothing.

  2. Hideaway knife. Lots of carry options, light, useful. I carry one as my 3rd blade. :)

  3. Either one of the above works... I'd also look at the Kershaw line of knives, they have various sizes.

  4. Leatherman Squirt for your keychain and a larger, fixed blade (I like the Ka-Bar TDI knife) for your purse. You can even clip the TDI inside your waistband if you don't have your purse handy....

  5. Depending on your attire, a neck knife such as the Blackhawk XSF might work:

  7. And I'd recommend a neck knife too. I like my little Ka-Bar.

  8. By "SOG Micro" do you mean the SOG micron? 'Cuz, really, I see nothing wrong with those two knives; if you need more, you need MORE. Like your sidearm and a bowie, maybe a machete... ;-)

That said, I have a Leatherman Micra tool on my key chain, and carry a lockback folder--no brand or model specified, because I ALWAYS lose pocket knives, so what I have is whatever I bought last. At work I carry a Gerber Shard tool, because it is just inside what I can have and remain employed... :-(

Neck knives can be vary handy, and there are many excellent models on the market.

Knives are at least as personal a decision as guns: YMMV, a lot depends on what you expect to be doing with the knife, and how big/heavy a knife you'll be comfortable with carrying in whatever manner your carrying it.

  9. I always have a CRKT Gekkota on my keyring. Fantastic and really rugged little blade that holds a great edge. It also has a secondary scredriver/bottle opener tool in it. Dunno if that's a deal breaker, but I dumped the bottle-opener I had on my keyring.

Also Its been over a year-and-a-half in my pocket with my keys and looks almost brand-new.

  10. Spyderco makes an excellent knife especially for keyrings, the Ladybug 3. There are a lot of colors and a few different styles. http://tinyurl.com/67j9a8c However, one option you might not have considered is waistband carry. You might need to shop around for clips that will do it. I have carried a large 5inch bladed SOG folding knife comfortably and often in my waistband. I'm pretty confident in that brand's pocket clips for that mode of carry.

  11. Cold Steel Urban Pal. They even talk about how nice it fits on a Key Chain.

  12. It's not a keychain knife, but my wife (who owns several full-sized knives but also wears her share of underpocketed clothes) is never without a Spyderco Cricket that she carries clipped inside the left cup of her bra.

It's a bitty little knife, but the S-curve blade makes it cut like a champ. Closed, it's an oval, so there are no pokey corners, but its shape when open gives a decent grip. And the stainless steel handled version is extremely thin.

Granted, she goes a bit further than most people would consider sane--her Utility Bra usually also includes a sheathed Swiss Army Knife and a AAA LED light. But the Cricket alone is with her constantly, and has been for years.
